Stars of the show descended upon the South Shields theatre to be introduced to their costume characters for the regulation photo-shoot, presided over by award-winning fashion, costume and set designer Paul Shriek.
Earlier this year, Paul’s costume creations for The Customs House won Best Costume Design in the Great British Pantomime Awards, a huge accolade when being judged in a category that also included The London Palladium.
Shriek works with long-time collaborator Matt Fox; their company Fox and Shriek is committed to creating visually stunning, unique and exciting theatrical productions.
“Our collaboration with The Customs House pantomime has gone from strength to strength in the last nine years. After winning Best Costume Design award this year, we’ve taken great delight in pulling out all the stops to create a big, bold and beautiful Customs House panto for 2018/19! This year we have created a spectacular and spell-binding winter wonderland, a scintillating and sumptuous feast for the eyes.
“Beauty and the Beast’s set and costumes are a smorgasbord of flamboyant imagery inspired by cinematic and theatrical memories – I call it ‘Hollywood vintage couture’.”

Ray Spencer, MBE, Executive Director of The Customs House, writer and director of Beauty and the Beast and much-loved panto dame, commented:
“Fox and Shriek have that rare gift of visioning truly innovative dreams and ideas. However wild and wacky the brief, exciting ways of tackling the challenges presented are always found and the outcome is breath-taking show stopping designs that have now been named as the best in the UK.
“The Customs House pantomime has also received the accolade of being ‘The Most Entertaining’ by The North East Theatre Guide for three years in a row, so you could say we are currently firing on all cylinders; we know we are the little panto with the big heart – and that heart just keeps on getting bigger!
“Originally written almost 300 years ago, Beauty and the Beast has had so many retellings in film, musicals and on stage, but for the first time ever, it now gets the unique Customs House twist.
“Why was the Prince of Peterlee turned into the Beast of Cooksonville by the beautiful enchantress, and how was Arbuthnot turned into Hénry the hoover? All will be revealed as Dame Bella leads our band of merry players through our inimitable take on this well-loved story.
"Get your tickets to this enchanting panto before the last petal falls – or before we sell out!”
