The north east’s largest bus operator, Go North East, has strengthened its senior management team and elevated its commitment to marketing by appointing its first-ever head of marketing.
Stephen King, who was formerly marketing and sales manager at the firm, has taken up the new position of head of marketing and retail. Stephen has led Go North East’s marketing activity over the last couple of years, supporting the company’s £30 million investment programme.
Mr King is responsible for marketing strategy and delivery; retail strategy, including the firm’s smartcard and mobile phone ticketing systems; stakeholder engagement and customer services. He manages a 17-strong team at the company’s head office in Gateshead.
Managing director of Go North East, Kevin Carr, said: “We have spent £7m on new buses so far this year, and marketing plays a key role in ensuring we get a return on that investment.
“Previously, marketing sat under a wider role but I now recognise that marketing and retail need to be represented in their own right at the highest level.
“Stephen is a valuable asset to the company and the best person to drive forward our marketing and retail plans.”
Stephen King, head of marketing and retail, adds: “I have been a part of the Go North East team for many years. I am looking forward to working closely with Kevin to build on the success of the consumer-focussed marketing of the last two years, and increasing our business to business activity.”
Go North East has a fleet of 680 buses and is the north east’s third largest employer with 2,100 staff. The company runs services in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Teesside.
