Newcastle Castle, the castle that gave the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne its name is set to re-open its historic doors on Saturday 22nd May after over 6 months of closure due to the pandemic. Visitors will once more be able to explore, discover and enjoy centuries of history right on their doorstep.

The Castle consists of the Castle Keep, Black Gate and some outdoor areas. Families, individuals and groups can now book their visit online so they can experience the drama and majesty of a former royal stronghold - a place that was a staging post for war and peace and home to sheriffs, knights, kings and queens. With a 43-foot high Great Hall, an intimate and ornate Chapel and unrivalled, panoramic views of the city, the River Tyne and its bridges, this iconic treasure should be on everyone’s 2021 list of things to do.

Newcastle Castle’s online booking system is open now so that people can book their visit in advance of the crowds and avoid disappointment during what looks like a very busy upcoming season: https://www.newcastlecastle.co.uk We recognise plans may change so, if visitors need they can amend their booking date, subject to availability, by contacting us. If they need to cancel they will receive a full refund or credit, no questions asked, so long as this is requested at least 48 hours before the visit.

With its city centre location just a short walk from Central Station or Monument Metro and with bus stops just outside, its imposing nature truly takes hold as you approach it. Newcastle Castle serves as a reminder of Newcastle’s history as we look to the future, and if you’ve never been in, there’s no better time than now. With so many bars and restaurants nearby, Newcastle Castle can be part of a very special day out.

“This fine Norman Castle is an icon of and testament to the history and development of Newcastle. It has watched over centuries of turbulent history from the Civil War to the Second World War, from the Industrial Revolution to the Coronavirus Pandemic. It has never been prouder to stand strong in the face of the adversities that we have all experienced over the last 13 months and it will continue to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of local residents, regional, national and international visitors.

We are extremely proud that we have managed to weather the storms so far and equally so happy to see visitors tread the paths of historic heroes and villains once more from the 22nd May 2021. But, what we most look forward to when we re-open, is hearing the shrieks and screams of excited kids (both big and small), lost in the wonder and awe of a fine medieval castle!”

ABOUT NEWCASTLE CASTLE

Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the city and the River Tyne.

A family-friendly attraction in the heart of the city we are open for the public to explore and enjoy our rich and varied history. Newcastle Castle also hosts all manner of events with a host of sell-out film screenings and theatre shows in 2018 and 2019. A nurturer of new talent, Newcastle Castle is fast becoming a key cultural hub of the North East.
