Chair: Philip Baker (The Banks Group)

The Chamber contact: Jonathan Walker

The Development Group is made up of 50 members representing sectors including housing development, surveying, commercial development, building consultancy and real estate. The diverse group all share an interest in the planning and development process, with the aim of influencing the political and business conditions most conducive to harnessing the economic benefits of development.

In 2015 the Development Group covered a range of exciting and important issues related to planning and development in the North East. This included an update from Bilfinger GVA on the progress of local plans across the region; an overview of the main changes to property taxation from The Chamber Partner member KPMG; and a presentation from NBS and RIBA on the opportunities of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the region's opportunity to promote itself as a digital construction centre of excellence.

In 2016 the Group will look at topics including the retail and leisure sector in the North East; the potential impact of the Northern Powerhouse and devolution; and consider the impact of the changing housing policy landscape on house building in the region.
