The Education & Skills Group consists of The Chamber members representing secondary, further, and higher education providers, employers in industry sectors which are facing skills shortages, training providers, and the recruitment sector. The Group includes representatives from businesses and organisations of all sizes and from all areas of the North East.
In recent months, The Chamber has responded to a number of Government consultations regarding proposed changes to education and skills policy. The Group has helped to develop our position on these policy issues, and provided insight into the challenges currently facing employers and education providers. In March 2016 the Group met with Iain Wright MP, Member of Parliament for Hartlepool and Chair of the Business, Innovation & Skills Select Committee, to discuss the latest announcements on the Government’s apprenticeships policy.
In 2016 the Group will monitor proposals for the introduction of the Apprenticeships Levy, the Government’s careers advice and guidance strategy, support for Further Education and independent training providers, and consider the opportunities presented by devolution to develop a joined-up regional skills strategy.
