Apprentices Prove to be a Strong Asset for Mortgage Lenders

One of the UK's premier mortgage lenders is celebrating a wise investment following the appointment of apprentices through the region's largest independent training provider.

UK Asset Resolution (UKAR) recruited 10 apprentices through the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) and, in the few months since they have been with the business, they have proved to be a strong asset for the company.

UKAR, which is the holding company for the Government-owned companies of Bradford & Bingley plc and Northern Rock Asset Management plc (NRAM), employs 2,400 employees in West Yorkshire and the North East, with many based at its Doxford Park centre in Sunderland. While UKAR is in wind-down and closed to new business and further loans, it continues to manage a mortgage book of £75bn, supporting 722,000 customers to deliver on its aim of maximising value for taxpayers.

All 10 NECC apprentices are based at Doxford Park and working towards completing Business Administration apprenticeships. And, although all the learners are working towards the same qualification, they work in a variety of roles across the business.

Lynn Philipson, Recruitment Consultant at UKAR, manages the Apprenticeship Scheme in Doxford Park and was involved in the selection of the current group of apprentices.

Lynn said:

"Since the UKAR apprenticeship programme began we've given dozens of young people a first step-up on the career ladder, providing future prospects. It's a great way of strengthening our links with the local community and investing in our future talent. I am now working in partnership with NECC to attract more potential apprentices."

Kimberley Daley, who works in Debt Management Administration at UKAR, was one of the successful NECC candidates who joined the North East programme in September 2011 and feels she has progressed a great deal in her first few months with the company.

Kimberley said:

"The course covers all aspects of administration, and my manager is really good at matching the tasks I do against what I need for my course.

"The best thing about the programme is the work I'm doing - there's so much variety - and there's the satisfaction that I'm doing something to help other people. Ultimately, I'd really like to continue working in my current department, doing what I'm doing now. It's a fantastic team; we have a laugh, and still get the job done."

NECC Director of Training and Skills Development, Patricia Wilkinson, said:

"NECC is very proud to be working with UKAR to deliver the apprenticeship programme at Doxford Park.

"All of the NECC apprentices have been incredibly successful so far and have given a clear demonstration of the talent and determination they possess.

"We look forward to working with UKAR in the future to support many more youngsters to take that important first step on the career ladder."

The UKAR apprentices were recruited through NECC's Training Recruitment Service (TRS) which is designed to provide a recruitment service between employers and apprentices.

This service is free of charge and specialises in the selection of young apprentices who are perfectly matched to suit the business' needs.

NECC processes hundreds of job applications before a specialist team of recruitment advisors interview and assess each individual, to ensure they meet the competencies required and are fully prepared for interviews.

NECC also arranges for CV's to be sent to employers before organising interviews at the employer's convenience.

Once a suitable individual has been selected, NECC can provide a comprehensive on and off the job training in a range of professions including customer services, engineering, accountancy and dental nursing amongst many others.
