Chamber Comment on Taylor Review

Chamber members will welcome the report’s recommendations to improve the flexibility of the Apprenticeship Levy.

Paul Carbert, policy adviser, North East England Chamber of Commerce said: “The Taylor Review rightly recognises the need to protect the benefits of flexible working patterns created by advances in technology, while updating legislation to ensure fairness for individuals and businesses. The report also acknowledges that non-wage costs to companies taking on staff are already high, and makes clear that future reforms should not risk increasing this further.

Chamber members will welcome the report’s recommendations to improve the flexibility of the Apprenticeship Levy to support other forms of high quality, off-the-job training. The focus on improving careers advice to support people throughout their working lives is also welcome, and members will want to see the Government’s national careers strategy build on the success of the Gatsby Good Career Guidance pilot in the North East LEP area.

The North East has made huge strides in reducing unemployment over recent months, with record numbers of people in employment and work underway to improve collaboration between business and education. We will now ensure that the voice of North East businesses is heard by the Government as they consider their response to the Review.”
