Jonathan Walker, director of policy, North East England Chamber of Commerce said:
“We welcome today’s announcement by the Chancellor on the extension of the furlough scheme. It will certainly be a great help to many businesses who are facing more restrictions at the moment. We have stressed to Government the importance of extending the financial support for longer to avoid a cliff edge end to it and we are pleased they have listened.
“However, this is a period of enormous uncertainty for businesses and we urge Government to be more proactive in its approach to both support and communications. As we head into a difficult winter, businesses need to be able to plan, prepare and hopefully look towards an exit from restrictions and an improving economic picture.
“Government must also use this new lockdown, which is so challenging for our business community, to make sure track and trace is fit for purpose and properly supports the reopening of the economy.”
