One of the British Army's highest ranking officers visited the North East yesterday on a mission to inspire regional captains of industry.

General Sir Nick Parker (KCB CBE AdC Gen), was also given a guided tour of Nissan before being whisked away in a new Nissan LEAF for an engagement as keynote speaker at the North East Chamber of Commerce's President's Club Lunch.

The Commander in Chief of UK Land Forces also met a number of Nissan staff members who serve or have served in the Territorial Army.

The Third President's Club Lunch, attended by leaders of the region's largest employers and influential businesses, was held in Great Hall of the Discovery Museum, Newcastle.

The events provide members with an opportunity to network and share experiences and views. It also enables members to create relationships with other key influencers in the North East.

The President's Club has proved a huge success with regional business, with attendance growing from 50 originally to 109 for this event. It has also attracted 167 members since its launch a year ago.

Gen Sir Nick is keen to improve the British Army's profile within the business community and forge future relationships that could prove mutually beneficial to the Army and industry in general.

He said:

"Creating relationships between the British Army and business is incredibly important and I think there is an opportunity for us to learn many things from each other.

"The British Army is undergoing a period of considerable change and the same is true in certain areas of industry. It was incredibly interesting touring Nissan today and hearing of the commitment to electric vehicles and the creation of the new battery mother plant to supplement the manufacture of the LEAF, which I had the pleasure of driving."

NECC Chief Executive, James Ramsbotham, said:

"I was delighted to welcome my great friend Gen Sir Nick Parker to the region and thank Nissan for its kind hospitality.

"I think the members of the NECC President's Club found Gen Sir Nick's address incredibly interesting and will hopefully be inspired by his never say die attitude and the many battles, both personal and professional, he has overcome in the face of incredible adversity."

Nissan Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, Kevin Fitzpatrick, said:

"It was a pleasure to welcome General Sir Nick Parker to our plant, to show him our new 100% electric Nissan LEAF and for members of our staff who serve in the Territorial Army to meet him and share their experiences."

The President's Club Lunch at the Discovery Museum was sponsored by Yorkshire Bank.
