NORTH EAST ENGLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE STATEMENT ON TODAY'S EMPLOYMENT FIGURES (17 March 2020)
Jonathan Walker, North East England Chamber of Commerce assistant director of policy said: "This month's figures reinforce the scale of the challenge to reduce unemployment in the North East. Levels are significantly higher than this time last year and the gap between the national and regional unemployment rate is extremely concerning.
"With businesses now facing the impact of the Covid 19 outbreak, it is imperative that the right support is in place to help them weather this storm and to ensure our economy can recover from any setbacks as quickly as possible."
- Employment in the North East stands at 1,209,000 or 71.7% - an increase of 9,000 over the quarter, but part of a decrease of 12,000 over the year. This compares to an employment rate of 76.5% nationally.
- North East unemployment stands at 80,000 or 6.3% - an increase of 1000 in this quarter and 15,000 over the year. This compares to an unemployment rate of 3.9% nationally.
- The claimant count stands at 74,200 or 5.9% in the North East.
