New Army Recruitment Centre Opened by Chamber Chief Executive

Wearside base launched

Chief executive of North East England Chamber of Commerce and Honorary Colonel 8th Battalion The Rifles James Ramsbotham and Commanding Officer of the Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Teale officially opened a new recruitment centre in Sunderland’s Bridges shopping centre.

The purpose of the centre is to give Wearside people an opportunity to meet serving Army personnel from the Rifles, to understand the roles and opportunities of serving in the modern Army and, if they wish to, begin the process of joining the Armed Forces (both Regular and Reserve).

James Ramsbotham said: “I am delighted to support this opportunity for our Armed Forces to raise awareness of the many employment and training opportunities available to them. I wish them every success with their presence in the Bridges.”

Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Teale said: “Serving in the Armed Forces is exciting, rewarding and full of opportunity whether someone wishes to serve as a full-time Regular or part-time Reservist. This fantastic opportunity allows the people of Wearside to come and understand the roles available in the modern Army and The Rifles, and speak to serving soldiers without necessarily having to travel to the permanent centres in Newcastle and Middlesbrough. I would like to thank The Bridges for the generous and outstanding support they have given us.”

Andrew Bradley, Bridges Centre director said: “I’m delighted to welcome the Armed Forces into the centre. They‘re a great fit for our shopping centre experience and will be a good source of information for our shoppers as well as visitors to the city. We wish them every success for their marketing drive during their time with us.”

The recruitment centre builds on the substantial number of Northern recruits who regularly serve in the Armed Forces. Among the careers information available will be details on the general soldier training and other skills including vehicle mechanic, chefs and engineering. The unit will be open until October.
