Ben Smith, CEO of Newcastle Castle gives his re-opening update on this iconic piece of Newcastle’s heritage
“Newcastle Castle has been putting the Castle back into Newcastle as part of the lifeblood of the city since it re-opened its doors in 2015 after a major Heritage Lottery Fund project. It closed its doors again on 19th March due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Maximising peoples experience and keeping them safe are paramount to how we re-open. We anticipate re-opening both The Black Gate and the Castle Keep on 24th July to a strictly limited number of people, who must book an admission timeslot online. During the re-opening phase there will be no more than 45 visitors at any one time (20% of fire capacity). Thus, visitors will be able to leisurely explore both buildings via a set one-way route as well as the outside areas. More than likely we will be introducing some additional forms of visitor engagement and some daily feature highlights.”
