  • Rollout follows EE launches in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland last year
  • 5G from EE now live in 71 cities and large towns
  • More high footfall places now covered with 5G, including Bath’s Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge, London Bridge and London’s Thornton Heath railway station

EE today announced it has switched on 5G in 21 new towns and cities across the UK - including North Shields and South Shields.

The two towns are among the first places in the North East to receive the next generation mobile technology on EE’s network, following the first sites going live in Newcastle and Sunderland last year. EE has now brought the best mobile experience to a total of 71 locations, and 5G to more places in the UK than any other operator.

Today, EE has added 5G to North Shields and South Shields as well as Birkenhead, Clydebank, Motherwell and Rotherham and switched on its first 5G sites in Bath, Bransholme, Bury, Chelmsford, Cheshunt, Clevedon, Dartford, Dinnington, Loughborough, Loughton, Rochester, Rugeley, Swadlincote, Staines and Waltham Cross.

The company, part of BT Group, was the first operator to launch 5G coverage in the UK in May 2019 and has been expanding its network daily. As well as switching on the first 5G sites in new cities and large towns, EE has also brought 5G to more high footfall places, including Bath’s Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge, London Bridge and London’s Thornton Heath railway station.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said: “We have 5G coverage in more places than any other operator, and remain focused on connecting even more towns and cities in 2020 and beyond to keep our customers connected in the busiest places.”

Liz Needleman, BT Group regional lead for the North of England, said: “EE has rolled out 5G in both North Shields and South Shields, meaning even more people and businesses in the area can benefit from the latest mobile technology.

“As well as providing faster speeds and more capacity, the future potential for 5G is incredible.”

James Ramsbotham, chief executive, North East England Chamber of Commerce said: “EE has now connected four towns and cities in the region to the latest mobile network technology and I welcome their investment in the area. It is excellent news that the North East is among the first places to receive 5G and it will help ensure we’re in a good position to realise the benefits of this technology, so important for business and industry as well as personal mobile users.”

According to independent 5G testing by RootMetrics, EE’s 5G network achieved the highest average download speed and highest 5G availability in London, Birmingham and Cardiff.
