Senior business leaders from across the North East were able to meet with Newcastle Airport and Virgin Atlantic to discuss Heathrow expansion and how this can benefit the North East.
Nathan Stower (Director of External Affairs and Sustainability) from Virgin Atlantic spoke to members about Virgin’s plans to increase their routes from Heathrow after Heathrow’s proposed expansion and how improved competition on routes can help passengers from the North East.
Graeme Mason (Planning and Corporate Affairs Director) at Newcastle International Airport spoke to members about connections from Newcastle Airport to Heathrow and the Airport’s work on the Visit North East England site to help promote the region and encourage visitors.
Businesses had the opportunity to ask questions around connections from Newcastle to Heathrow, connections from Heathrow to South American markets and how new connections can help to encourage visitors to the North East.
James Ramsbotham, chief executive, North East England Chamber of Commerce: "The North-East is a great exporting region and we know that local exporting businesses want to reach new markets. We need more opportunities to connect with the rest of the world which is why we are pleased to be working with Virgin Atlantic on their new plans to build extra regional connectivity.
“We don’t think of Heathrow as a London airport - here in the North-East we think of it as the UK’s only hub airport. Businesses here want to see more destinations, more choice, more competition and more opportunities to reach global markets which is why we support Heathrow expansion.''
