James Ramsbotham, chief executive, North East England Chamber of Commerce said: “This announcement is disappointing for all of those whose jobs will be put at risk and it will be felt throughout the region."
“It is important that this superb manufacturing facility’s potential is developed for the future. The investment in its substantial expertise in welding and painting skills should be part of a plan to build the business and secure increased investment for the longer term. Hitachi’s state-of-the-art £100m plant is in the perfect position – as one of the most advance in the country and with an established a successful UK-wide supply chain. We now call on the Government increased investment in our rail network (particularly HS2) with trains built by Hitachi to really deliver economic ‘levelling-up’ for the North East.”
