Steve Cram tells Chamber Members about huge economic benefit of sport

North East running legend and TV sports commentator Steve Cram was the guest speaker at the Chamber’s County Durham Annual Review.

At the event held at the Durham Marriott Royal County he spoke about the tremendous promotional potential of sporting events where they can attract visitors, attract investment, inspire people and promote a healthy lifestyle.

He outlined the scale of the sporting industry around the world and how it puts places on the global map. In his speech he also stressed the boost for mental health sport brings as it encourages goal-setting, a positive attitude and provides inspiration to get fitter.

His business Events of the North organises a range of sporting events including the Kielder Marathon and the Durham City Runs which are expanding this year to take place from Thursday 16 – Saturday 18th July.

In the formal business of the annual review Mike Wade from Hodgson Sayers was re-elected Chair and Dawn Fairlamb of New College Durham was re-elected Vice-Chair. Summarising the success of the County Durham area from the Chamber’s members point of view he reported that there had been around 30 events held in the area attended by around 2,000 members.

James Ramsbotham, Chamber chief executive reviewed the year. He said: “Brexit has dominated our business world for the past 12 months and now it is imperative we get it done right. We have seen a number of successes in 2019 in particular the support for our Fast Track East Coast campaign to get much-needed investment for our East Coast mainline rail route.”
