For the third month in a row, employment and unemployment statistics are heading in the wrong direction for the North East.North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) reaction to today's employment estimates.
Headline figures for the North East:

• Employment in the North East stands at 1,161,000 or 66.5% – unchanged over the quarter and a rise of 4,000 over the year. This compares to a rate of 71.5% nationally.
• North East unemployment stands at 134,000 or 10.3% – a rise of 7,000 over the quarter and unchanged over the year. This compares to a rate of 7.8% nationally.
• The claimant count stands at 85,800 or 6.9% in the North East, compared to 4.3% nationally.

NECC Director of Policy, Ross Smith, said: "It is good to see both sets of statistics heading in the right direction, no matter how slight the improvements.

"The rise in employment levels is welcome as is the slight drop in unemployment estimates and while one month's figures do not reverse the negative changes we have seen throughout 2013, hopefully it represents the start of a positive trend towards the end of the year.

"Once again, the main positive from the monthly estimates is provided by the continued fall in claimant count figures, which now stand at their lowest levels for two years."
