NECC Head of Policy Ross Smith and Buy North East steering group chairman Alan Holmes were today among the speakers at a North East public procurement conference. NECC put across key messages from the Buy North East campaign about the need for broader, simpler and smarter approaches to public procurement, avoiding public spending cuts rebounding on the private sector and understanding the often unintended economic consequences of methods to achieve “efficiency savings” in procurement.
The conference was addressed by Ian Taylor, the new director of the North Eastern Purchasing Organisation (NEPO). He spoke about the need to achieve real cash savings for local government from public procurement in the wake of the Spending Review, but stressed that council leaders and chief executives had also prioritised the economic interests of the North East. He made a commitment that supplier representatives will be involved in the governance of the reformed NEPO. Mr Taylor will be attending NECC’s next Buy North East steering group meeting on 2 December.
Presentations from the event should be available on the North East Improvement and Efficiency Partnership website next week.
