The Virtual Export Manager programme places seasoned export professionals with North East businesses to provide practical 'hands on' support to increase their international trade.


As in any aspect of managing your business, developing the international trade side has its exciting opportunities and frustrating challenges. An export related business issue could be vital to growth of your company; but like many firms you lack either the specific technical exporting expertise or the personnel to tackle it. And identifying the right professional expertise to grow overseas trade can be a major obstacle course in itself.

The Virtual Export Manager Programme has been designed precisely to assist exporters increase their overseas sales by providing funding to engage a seasoned export professional to provide 'hands on' practical support on a specific time limited export-related project which addresses an issue that they alone are unable to undertake.

How does it work?

We have already matched companies with export professionals to deliver the following assignments:

First step is to contact the VEM Programme Manager to make an appointment to discuss your project and how the VEM Programme can help you.

Companies can apply for funding and either engage their own pre-identified export professional or through our own VEM Consultants’ Register, we will also attempt to match you with an export professional with the relevant sector, technical or geographical expertise and experience to address your particular issue.

The programme will fund the cost of the project on a 50% match funding basis.

Completed or assignments which have already commenced are not eligible for funding.

• Developing entry strategies
• Identifying potential agents or distributors
• Securing product certification
• Drawing up legal contracts & JV agreements
• Researching licensing strategies
• Supporting product registration

Which North East companies can apply?

Could you be a VEM Consultant?

The funding is available to both new and inexperienced exporters, however companies must be

• based in the North LEP of the UK

• an SME (EU eligibility criteria of fewer than 250 employees & a turnover of no more than € 50 m)
• providing a UK product or service
• able to demonstrate a commitment to growth through international trade

We maintain a register of export consultants and are always keen to match applicant companies with experienced export professionals specialising in a wide range of international trade expertise including:

• Specific geographic expertise
